The Petersberg, formerly also called Stromberg, is a 335.9 m above sea level[1] high peak of the Siebengebirge in the Rhein-Sieg district, North Rhine-Westphalia. It rises east of the Rhine above and in the city of Königswinter. On the opposite bank is the Bonn district of Bad Godesberg. The mountain, with its hotel first opened in 1892, gained great importance for recent German history between 1949 and 1952 as the seat of the Allied High Commission, which was made up of the highest representatives of the Western victorious powers in Germany after the Second World War. From 1955 to 1969 and again from 1990 after extensive reconstruction, the Grand Hotel on the Petersberg served as a guest house for the Federal Republic of Germany. After the seat of government was moved to Berlin in 1999, it remained in the possession of the federal government and continued to be used as a guest house for special occasions and at irregular intervals as a venue for national and international conferences.
