    The Adelhausen Church is a Roman Catholic church and was originally the church of the Dominican monastery in Adelhausen; today it is a branch church of the Freiburg Cathedral Parish.

      The history of the church is that of the Adelhausen monastery. By 1786, the five medieval Freiburg Dominican convents had been incorporated into it, namely:

      the Annunciation Monastery, founded in 1234 in the old village of Adelhausen in today's Wiehre district;

      the Maria Magdalena Monastery or Monastery of the Penitents, founded before 1250 in the Preacher's suburb;

      the St. Agnes Monastery, founded in 1264 in the Lehener suburb;

      the St. Catherine (of Alexandria) Monastery, founded in 1297 in the old village of Wiehre, like Adelhausen in today's Wiehre district; and

      the St. Catherine of Siena Monastery or St. Catharina of Senis on the Graben, founded in 1419 like the Maria Magdalena Monastery in the Preacher's suburb. By 1687, the Annunciation of Mary, Mary Magdalene, St. Agnes and St. Catherine (of Alexandria) had united to form a convent "ad Annuntiationem B.M.V. et S. Catharina V.M.",[2] to the Annunciation of Mary, the Virgin and Mother of God, and St. Catharina, later simply called Adelhausen Monastery or Adelhausen New Monastery. The existing monastery building was built for it from 1687 onwards in the Schneckenvorstadt or Oberen Gerberau, in today's Altstadt-Ring district.

        There were now two Dominican convents in Freiburg, St. Catherine of Siena and the New Monastery. They got off lightly when Emperor Joseph II closed the monasteries as part of Josephinism. In 1786, the Upper Austrian government incorporated St. Catherine of Siena into the New Monastery and at the same time obliged the New Monastery to maintain a girls' school.

        Thanks to the recognized school system, the community also survived the wave of secularization from 1802 to 1811. However, in 1811 it was subjected to the regulations for the Catholic female teaching and educational institutes of the Grand Duchy of Baden, with interventions in monastic life.[1] The end came with the Baden Kulturkampf. On November 15, 1867, the nuns, now teachers, were told that the monastic community was being dissolved. The monastery's assets were transferred to a foundation, which has been called the "Adelhausenstiftung Freiburg i.Br." since 1978.[3]

        Since the end of the 18th century, the monastery's residential area has housed classrooms next to the nuns' cells. These were later replaced by museum and administrative rooms. After being remodeled and expanded, the convent buildings now serve as the administrative headquarters of the Freiburg foundation administration.[4] Only the church still serves its original purpose.
