The Église du Sacré-Cœur et Notre-Dame de Lourdes is a sacred building in the Belgian city of Liège. The building in the Cointe district is part of the Mémorial Interallié, a memorial to the First World War. The church is often referred to as a basilica, although it never received this title. The reason for this is the imposing and unusual neo-Byzantine architectural style. [1]

After the First World War, Liège was chosen as the location for the construction of a memorial to honor the Allied casualties. It was built according to the plans of the architect Joseph Smolderen. Work started in 1928 and ended in 1936. The church was consecrated in the same year.

The church was profaned in 2010 and became part of the Walloon heritage in 2011. The church has been on sale since May 2011.

The church was profaned in 2010 and in 2011 part of the Walloon Heritage. In May 2011 the church was up for sale.
Since 2021 it has belonged to the Episcopal Foundation Fondation de la Basilique de la Paix. In January 2022 it became known that the Roger Gehlen group of companies from Malmedy had been awarded the contract to put the building to a new use. From 2023, a 40 m high climbing wall, a panorama restaurant, a cinema and a multi-purpose hall are to be built inside. The choir is preserved and continues to serve as a memorial. The crypt and sacristy are to retain their religious function in the future as well.
