Welcome to the Bottelarij, a warm place located in a historic gatehouse in the heart of Haspengouw, with a colorful gastronomy and a surprising cultural and tourist offer. Every day, special people with artisanal creativity create a large portion of human happiness, a connecting meeting and working world for everyone.
On the site of the former Hayen brewery in Ulbeek (Wellen) you will now find the Bottelarij.
The building was originally a small village brewery that was converted into an impressive and for its time, ultra-modern brewery by Arthur Hayen in 1891.
In its heyday, the complex consisted of a house with outbuildings, stables, brewing hall, etc. However, the necessary economic investments were not forthcoming and the lack of them forced the owner to stop the brewing activities in 1936. Only the buildings have been preserved from this brewery past. So there is no more brewing activity. The main building with its unique, neoclassical facade remained standing. Flanked by company buildings that are characterized by a sober, neo-Romanesque appearance with a striking gatehouse. In order to preserve these industrial witnesses and the village view, the Oude Sint-Rochusbrouwerij was classified as a monument.
As an organization, AKSI wants to offer people new employment opportunities and a view of a new future. The beautiful Haspengouw nature and the special building were the reason for AKSI to launch the Bottelarij. An initiative with which AKSI supplements, expands and strengthens the classic existing range in the culinary, socio-cultural and touristic aspects.
