The replica of a wing telegraph is on the Potsdam Telegrafenberg, right next to the photographic refractor. Telecommunications began in Germany with optical-mechanical telegraphy. The Royal Prussian Optical Telegraph Line is also jokingly called “The King’s Cell Phone”.

In Potsdam, the large double telescope erected in 1899 and the surrounding dome building on the Potsdamer Telegrafenberg are called the Great Refractor (lens telescope).
This first observatory built specifically for astrophysics was in operation until 1968. It is now a listed building and is looked after by a support association.
