Historical location: In 1738, sworn surveyor Vandevelde drew this map showing the situation in Bazel and Rupelmonde after the great flood of 1715 and the repair of the dikes in 1718. He called this triangular piece of land next to Kallebeek "Fasseyt". An understandable mistake. The people of Bazel called this piece "Fassaat" and he thought that was dialect for Fasseyt. But that is not how this area got its name.
During the reclamation in the 12th and 13th centuries, this triangle was not reclaimed, but it was provided with a moat that ran inland from the Scheldt to the point of the triangle to be able to load and unload ships there, closer to the village of Bazel in the castle of Wissekerke. "Fossa" and "fossatum" mean in Latin: provided with a moat. Fossatum became Fossaat and finally Fassaat. Hence the name of this historic location.
