In 1927, Quach Dam was one of the two most powerful rice traders in Cho Lon. He owned the Thong Hiep Rice Trading and Milling Company and four steam-powered ships. He built the Binh Tay Market, became a French citizen and was awarded the medal of "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur".
