Portuguese sailors discovered the islands in the 15th century, after which they quickly became an important base for the transatlantic slave trade. They were also important ports of call for ships traveling between Europe, Africa and America.

Praia, officially Cidade da Praia, is the capital of Cape Verde, an independent archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. It is located on the island of Santiago (Portuguese: São Tiago).
Cape Verde, a Portuguese colony until 1975, lies off the coast of West Africa, south of the Canary Islands. Praia is the country's largest and most important city, with a population of approximately 142,000. Praia has been the capital since 1770.

Praia is the most suitable anchorage for ships bound for the Far East or Brazil. This has been known since the 15th century. According to the Southern Netherlands traveler Jan Frans Michel, who described the city and the island in detail in 1752, the seabed there is sandy, while that of the rest of the island is more silty.

Praia International Airport is located three kilometers northeast of the city.
