"In the Dortmund Botanical Garden, the Rombergpark, there is a pond of almost 2000 m² with 17 swamp cypresses. When the years are not as dry as the summers from 2018 to 2020, the conifers are constantly in water. This is part of the feel-good factor for the tree species that comes from the swamps of Florida. The trees were planted in 1925 and have a trunk circumference of around 1 meter. The entire "swamp cypress forest" is protected as a large natural monument.

As a special feature, swamp cypresses form so-called breathing knees, which are roots that grow conically out of the ground. They are reminiscent of dwarfs and have the function of supplying the tree with air. Specimens that are constantly in water form a bottleneck-shaped tapered trunk, i.e. the lower ends of the trunk are considerably thicker than the rest of the trunk. The conifer is summer green, the autumn coloring in copper red is very colorful. When the needles fall, the area under the tree looks like a reddish-brown to fox-red carpet.

The Rombergpark in Dortmund was planned by Düsseldorf's court gardener Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe and created in the years around 1820 on behalf of the noble Romberg family as a landscape garden based on the English model. The density of special, old trees is very high, I would just like to name a few examples: a striking group of copper beech trees from 1825 at the bastion, a linden avenue of decapitated trees, a very strong fern-leaved beech, several old plane trees and a beautiful ginkgo in the northern entrance area."
