Temple de la Madeleine
The Temple de la Madeleine is one of the oldest churches in Geneva. The first traces of a chapel on this site date back to Roman times.
From that time onwards, churches were destroyed and rebuilt on this site or replaced by larger ones. In the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in its current Gothic form after a fire. In the Middle Ages, its congregation was one of the richest in the city. During the Reformation, the church was converted into a simple and sober Protestant temple. The name "Church of Saint Mary Magdalene" disappeared and was replaced by the name "Temple de la Madeleine". Guillaume Farel and Jean Calvin, among others, preached here.
Since 1926, the Eglise Protestante de Genève (EPG) has made the Temple de la Madeleine available to the Reformed German-Swiss community in Geneva. The church owes its current appearance to its last renovation (1975). Due to its excellent acoustics, it is a popular venue for concerts.
