The Stadhuis (town hall) of Enschede was built between 1930 and 1933. Architect Gijsbert Friedhoff's design was based on the Stockholm City Hall. Friedhoff had completed an internship there. The town hall stands on the spot where Enschede's administration buildings have stood since the 16th century. The town hall was damaged in 1943 and 1944 during bombing raids during World War II.

In the square in front of Enschede's town hall, you'll find a work of art consisting of several ellipses. The artist Joop Hekman was inspired by the oval shape of the city center streets between 1981 and 1983. The work features bronze human figures in a playful arrangement. A child plays in the water of the fountain, next to her mother, her father watching, and a Chow Chow.
