The Barbican in Warsaw, built around 1548 as part of the defensive walls of the Old Town, was intended to secure the New Town Gate. Designed by John Baptist of Venice, it had two storeys with embrasures and a covered porch. Due to the development of artillery, it quickly became outdated and played a defensive role only once – in 1656 during the Swedish Deluge. Partially demolished in the 18th century, it was incorporated into the city development in the 19th century. Rebuilt in 1952–1954, it currently houses a seasonal exhibition of the Warsaw Museum devoted to the city's defensive walls.

Barbican in Warsaw - a barbican built around 1548 as an element of the Warsaw defensive walls - the foregate of the New Town Gate of the Old Town.

The purpose of building the barbican was to increase the safety of entry to Old Warsaw through the New Town Gate and to provide lateral defense of the neighboring walls. It is one of several such structures in Europe.

The brick structure has the form of a two-story, semicircularly topped driveway bastion protruding in front of the moat. The lower storey contains artillery loopholes, and the upper storey contains a closed, covered porch with round gun windows on both sides. The barbican was connected to the outer wall of the defensive walls by a non-separated neck of the same height. Inside the neck and in front of the barbican there were probably drawbridges.
