    The history of Dürnstein Abbey
In 1372 a chapel was built in Dürnstein dedicated to the Mother of God Mary, St. Andrew, St. Lawrence and all the saints. The widow Elisabeth von Kuenring donated her property for this purpose. In 1410, her heir Otto von Maissau founded a monastery near this chapel and had Augustinian canons brought from Wittingau in Bohemia (today Třeboň in the Czech Republic) to Dürnstein. The canons built the church, cloister and monastery in the 15th century. The layout of the medieval monastery building also remained decisive for the Baroque renovation.
In the late 17th century, the provosts, as the heads of the monastery are called by the Augustinian canons, had the complex renovated in the Baroque style for the first time, but stuck to the Gothic structure. When Hieronymus Bösebacher was elected provost in 1710, the church and monastery were, according to his own statements, in poor condition. He first had the canons' living area renovated with the convent building. Afterwards, the restoration of the church, cloister and tower began and the south wing with the large church portal was completely rebuilt. The irregular abbey courtyard was also closed into a representative square during this time.

The collegiate church, also a parish church since 1745
The collegiate church, which has also been a parish church since 1745, is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary into heaven. During the renovation between 1721 and 1724, parts of the Gothic church were reused. Numerous artists and craftsmen were involved in the execution of the architectural decoration and the interior decoration of the church. Among others, Santino Bussi, Antonio Beduzzi and Carl Haringer are mentioned in the provost's notes. The sculptural work was designed by Johann Schmidt, the father of the famous Austrian baroque painter Martin Johann Schmidt (“Kremser Schmidt”). “Kremser Schmidt” himself also worked in the monastery. Two pictures in the side altars are from him. The freely rotating tabernacle of the high altar in the shape of a globe, which is decorated with 44 scenes from the life of Jesus, is unique. The organ in the collegiate church dates from 1724, has over 800 pipes and is a southern German type of baroque organ. It is still in its original condition today.
