In 2013, the ‘Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of 7 Sorrows’ in Ruiselede celebrated its 325th anniversary. On the occasion of this anniversary, the Municipal Council asked artist Jef Claerhout to create a work of art as a token of appreciation for the centuries-long commitment of the Sisters to the residents of our village and the surrounding parishes, but also to those in need across the borders.
The work of art ‘Our Lady of 7 Sorrows’ by Jef Claerhout was unveiled in the municipal park of Ruiselede on 27 June 2015 and is an abstract representation of Our Lady surrounded by the 7 sorrows.
We see a woman, one of the sisters or Mary herself, in a long robe. In her hands she holds a crocus, a powerful life-giving symbol that the Sisters of Our Lady of 7 Sorrows have been using for a long time, also in their logo. The crocus is a harbinger of spring. Even after the coldest winter, he finds the strength to grow and blossom courageously. That is why he symbolizes resurrection: life wins, again and again.
