The parish is said to have been founded around 900 from the St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent. Around 1100, the parish rights were transferred to the St. Donaas Chapter in Bruges. Presumably in the 12th century, two aisles and a main choir were added. At the beginning of the 15th century, the main choir was expanded. In 1695, the church was plundered and destroyed by French troops and extensive restoration work was carried out, especially from 1753 to 1774. In 1768, a sacristy was added and the facades of the choir were completely rebuilt. In the centuries that followed, the church was expanded, renovated or ... - due to a widening of the street in front - (in 1962-1964) ... shortened several times. Only the transept, the crossing tower and the choir of the old church were preserved. Around the church are a number of pilgrimage chapels, dedicated to Saint Aldegondis, who is invoked against cancer.
