Lake Bordesholm is a well-known local recreation destination.
The name "Bordesholm" is derived from the words "Bard" (Middle Low German for shore) and "Holm" (Middle Low German for island).
The lake was formed after the last ice age from a subglacial drainage valley 10,000 years ago. Since then it has undergone constant change and is of great importance for people settling there. While it served as a source of food and drinking water for a long time, it is now used primarily for recreational purposes. Hunters and gatherers left evidence of human activities around the lake as early as the Neolithic period. 4,000 years later, people settled there. The monastery church on the northern shore of the lake was originally on an island. But a drop in the lake level, the cause of which is still unknown, connected the island to the shore. You're standing with your back to the church here. From here, you actually get a good view across the water. There's a nice playground with rest areas. A really big (and peaceful) goose greeted us here.
