In a somewhat anonymous and remote place - on the side of a grandstand at the circuit - a memorial has been set up for Roland Ratzenberger, who died 1 day before Ayrton Senna's fatal accident during the qualifications for the San Marino GP in 1994. In contrast to the monument for Senna, little effort has been made here to give the pilot a worthy monument. The fate of a rookie F1 pilot who tried to qualify for his 2nd GP.

Roland Ratzenberger (Salzburg, 4 July 1960 - Imola, 30 April 1994) was an Austrian racing driver who competed in Formula 3000, Formula Nippon and Formula 1. He started his career in motorsport relatively late, in 1983, and achieved successes in Formula Ford and the World Touring Car Championship. Ratzenberger also raced in the Le Mans Series and the Japanese Sports Prototype Championship.

In 1994 he made his Formula 1 debut with the Simtek team. Unfortunately he died during qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix after a tragic accident in which his front wing broke off and he crashed into a wall at high speed.
