The small, artificial stream runs through the middle of the city and beneath the pedestrian zone. From its source, the confluence of the Rodau and Wiedau streams, to its confluence with the Wümme, it measures 700 meters.

The Stadtstreek (City Tree) was created artificially in 1566: construction debris from a major fire was dumped into the Alt-Wiedau stream, creating a new watercourse that was later expanded into a small canal through the center of the city.

It is particularly visible between the Old Pharmacy and the two city warehouses. At the city warehouse, which houses a restaurant, steps lead down to the stream. Here you can take a break and cool your feet. There are also several benches along the stream for a rest.

The bridge, which leads through the pedestrian zone over the Stadtstreek, is decorated with geraniums every May. It is therefore also known as the "Geranium Bridge."
