The Swalmdal is a Natura2000 area. The meandering stream the Swalm runs through the valley. The stream is located at the transition from the plateau between the Maas and the Rhine to the Meuse valley.

Schwalm is a small tributary of the Meuse. It rises south of Wegberg in the border with Germany and the Dutch Central Bank Limburg, then runs through the German city Schwalmtal and culminates in Swalmen (municipality Roermond) in the Meuse, more specifically between cycling and Rijkel on Thunder Mountain.

The river has a length of 45 km, of which twelve are on Dutch territory. The catchment area measuring 277 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers in the Netherlands. The decay is 72 meters, including 12 in the Netherlands.

The Dutch part, and part of the upper reaches of the Schwalm, maintain their natural, meandering course or be utilized. The valley is part of the nature park Maas-Schwalm-Nette.

fast-flowing, meandering tributary of the Meuse. The German part in particular was canalized for agricultural purposes, but the natural course is now being restored as much as possible. Beautiful natural river bends can be seen around Groenewoud.

The renatured area of the Schwalm (Swalm) is a natural nature park. The water slowly flows to the Meuse. Many biotopes, moors and forest areas have emerged on their way. Works of art are displayed along the Schwalm. Nature trails run close to the water. You can cross the river and moor with dry feet over the wooden bridges and wooden paths. A beautiful relaxing idyll and a habitat for animals and birds.

The Swalm stream valley is part of the Maas-Swalm-Nette Nature Park, with its highly diverse landscapes and many natural meanders.

Quote: "The Swalm valley is located on the eastern flank of the Meuse valley in Central Limburg, between Roermond and Beesel. Springs rise on the valley flanks, and seepage occurs at the foot of the terraces. Species-rich alder forests have developed in these areas, with a large population of the Sedge Whorl Snail (Vertigo moulinsiana). The fast-flowing waters of the Swalm are home to vegetation of the Floating Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus fluitans) and the River Bullhead. The Gaffellibelle (Ophiogomphus cecilia) has also recently been rediscovered here."

The Swalm is a meandering stream in Central Limburg, deeply incised in the Maas terrace landscape. The stream lies on the transition from the plateau between the Maas and Rhine to the Maas valley. In various places at the foot of the terraces, seepage occurs and springs emerge; species-rich alder swamp forests have developed here. The community of floating water crowfoot occurs in the stream. The area also consists of reed beds, marsh, damp grasslands, locally flooded hayfields, copses and thickets. Furthermore, a stream valley grassland near the Maas is also part of the area.
