One of what used to be several springs rises in a swampy spot in the woods between Niefernheim and Wachenheim. A carriage loaded with treasures is said to have once sunk here and to this day people are still looking for its traces in this enchanted place.

Among the springs in the Zellertal, the water outlets “In the Holes” southeast of Niefernheim occupy a special position. They form ponds covered by marsh plants, from which occasional rotten tree stumps protrude. How can the creation of these spring ponds be explained?
The repeatedly observed sinking of tall trees suggests that water rising from below with strong buoyancy initially undermines the poorly permeable top layer and then causes the trees to collapse. The emergence of the springs from the depths can be seen as evidence that these water outlets are located in tectonically predetermined locations. They are located at the intersection of two fault lines, which are therefore responsible for their formation. The spring ponds lie in the course of the faults that extend into the eastern Zellertal. On the other hand, in the northern continuation of the Rhenish fault line, which limits the Buntsandsteinbarre that emerges in the Eisbachtal to the west. The Niefernheim “holes” are therefore real sources of fault.
