Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of St. George, to whom the church in Bad Gandersheim was consecrated, but the veneration of his person goes back a long way to early Christianity. A martyr who is equated with George is said to have lived in the third century.
Well known and widespread, however, is the legend of St. George slaying the dragon, mostly he is depicted - on paintings or as a statue - as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback.
The day of remembrance of the very popular George - he is among other things the patron saint of the English Kingdom - in the saints calendar is on April 23rd.

St. George's Church
- Church of Citizens -

In the Middle Ages, St. George's Church, outside the city walls, was the only parish church for the city's citizens. The Moritzkirche on the market, today part of the town hall, was intended as a branch church of St. Georg for private devotions only.
Around 1200, the Gandersheim abbess Mechthild II confirmed a "traditional customary law" according to which the members of the monastery belonged to the church parish, but the merchants who were subject to market rights belonged to the parish of St. George.
This regulation refers to the early days of Gandersheim's settlement history:
In the area of St. George's Church, which probably dates back to the 10th century, there was already a 'Wik', a trading place, from the founding of the Gandersheim monastery in 852, to which the field name 'An der Wiek' still refers.
