The parish, unlike the city, has an official document of its foundation. It was issued in Opatów on August 2, 1614, by the next owner of Ostrowiec, Prince Janusz Ostrogski, the castellan of Kraków. Some people have inferred the date of the city's foundation based on the phrase "Ostrowiec noviter a nobis erecti" contained in it. Prince Janusz Ostrogski built a church on a hill near the Kamienna River, perhaps on the site of a chapel that had previously stood there. On August 8, 1614, Bishop Walerian Łubieński from Wallachia, authorized by Bishop Piotr Tylicki from Kraków, consecrated the church under the invocation of Archangel Uriel. The church had three altars: the main one under the invocation of Archangel Uriel and two side altars under the invocation of St. Lawrence and Mary Magdalene.

Due to the growing number of Ostrowiec residents, and thus the faithful of the parish of St. Michael, there was a need to build a larger church. This idea was taken up by Father Jan Naulewicz, the parish priest of St. Michael in the years 1902-1910. In 1904, he approached the architect engineer Stefan Szyller from Warsaw with a proposal to prepare a project to expand the existing church.

The old body of the church was completely incorporated into the mass of the new temple. The three-bay main nave was based on the outline of the old external walls. They were partly used to form the pillars separating it from the new side aisles. In this way, a three-nave, three-bay, basilica-like body was created, preceded by a quadrangular tower on the west, with a hall and a storeroom adjoining it on the south, and a funeral chapel on the north. The single-bay presbytery was closed by the architect with a semicircular apse, placing a sacristy and a room for the brotherhood next to it on the north. On the south side of the presbytery, the architect designed a chapel, which is covered by a dome with a lantern. This chapel received a corridor connection with the sacristy, running around the apse from the outside in an arc.
