Blitterswijck was first mentioned in 1242. The oldest deed in the name of the aldermen of Blitterswijck dates from 14 April 1360. The deeds were sealed by the bailiff or the lord. Shortly before 1670, a separate alderman's seal was introduced, with the church patroness the Virgin Mary carrying Jesus as a child on her left arm. In her right arm she holds a sceptre that rests on her shoulder. The inscription is Blitterswick.

The village was located in Upper Guelders and was part of the Land of Kessel, which belonged to the Duke of Guelders - and later the Spanish King as his successor from 1543. When the Spanish royal house died out, the War of the Spanish Succession followed, which led to Blitterswijck also being occupied by the Prussians and formally becoming Prussian in 1713. This remained the case until the French conquered Prussian Guelders in 1794.

In 1798, the French abolished the manorial rights and the courts of aldermen and replaced them with other forms of government. When the Kingdom of the Netherlands was established (2 December 1813), Blitterswijck became part of it. However, during the Belgian war of independence (1830), this area opted to join Belgium and, through the Treaty of London in 1839, joined the German Confederation, which it left in 1866. Since then, Blitterswijck has been permanently incorporated into the Netherlands.

In 1776, the lordships of Blitterswijck and Wanssum were merged. Until 1969, Blitterswijck belonged to the municipality of Meerlo, when it was added to Wanssum, after which the municipality of Meerlo-Wanssum was created. In 2010, this municipality was added to Venray.

Blitterswijck is located near the left bank of the Maas at an altitude of approximately 16 metres. An old Maas bed lies to the west of the Maas. Here you can still find a few ponds such as Linkstraat and Grubbelsvijver, and small plots of swamp forest. To the north and east of here are forest areas such as Hooge Heide and Galgenberg, mainly coniferous and mixed forest, on river dune complexes.

Between Blitterswijck and Ooijen, parallel to the Maas, lies the nature development area 't Sohr, along an old Maas arm.
