Completed in 1772, the aqueduct brought water to the city, where it fed a water reservoir (French: Chateau d’eau) near the triumphal arch Porte du Peyrou. From there, fountains and public water points were supplied. The fountains served were the Fontaine des Trois Graces on the Place de la Comedie, the Fontaine de Cybele on the Place Chabaneau and the Fontaine des Licornes on the Place de la Canourgue.
The two arcade floors of the aqueduct were modeled on the design of the Pont du Gard. The aqueduct is 880 meters long and has a relatively constant maximum height of around 22 meters. The span of the upper, small arches is around 3 meters, that of the larger, lower arches around 9 meters. The structure was designed by Henri Pitot, Donnat and Jean Antoine Giral.
