The current, classicist church with Gothic tower replaces a Romanesque building from the middle of the 11th century. In 1235, the tithes were granted to the Villers Abbey by the baron knight Ludovicus van Diepenbeek (Dippebeke). In 1582, they were transferred to the Saint-Lambertus chapter of Liège.

Construction history: fire in the Romanesque church in 1490; reconstruction started in 1500, by the Villers Abbey, now in Gothic style; in 1648, enlargement works, as well as a connection between the tower and the church, which were previously separate. In the same year, the ground floor of the tower was vaulted (date on the keystone); demolition of the Gothic church, with preservation of the tower, and construction of a classicist church in 1777; in 1787 construction of both portals; in 1849 erection of the rood screen by Hermanus Moonen; from 1860 to 1862 enlargement of the church; restoration works, from 1879 to 1880; restoration of the interior, from 1893 to 1894; new enlargement in 1931.

Saint Servatius, after whom the church is named, was the first historically verifiable bishop in the Netherlands. According to tradition, he would have been the last bishop of Tongeren and the first bishop of Maastricht. He lived in the 4th century. Little is known with certainty about Servatius' life, but in the Middle Ages numerous legends arose around the figure of Servatius, sometimes intertwined with historical facts. Most legends describe miracles attributed to Servatius over time. These legends inspired the 12th-century poet Hendrik van Veldeke to write the "Leven van Sint-Servaas", one of the first literary writings in an early form of the Dutch language.

Diagonally in front of the church you will find a statue of the patron saint, Saint Servatius. It was designed by Rik Verhelst and donated by the parishioners on the initiative of the Sint-Servaas church factory on the occasion of 500 years of the church tower.
