Joachim II of Brandenburg, a very pugnacious man, had a Renaissance hunting lodge built on the island in the Dahme in 1558. It was probably much more powerful and stronger than the castle later expanded by King Friedrich I in the Baroque style. In the years that followed, the castle was further expanded and rebuilt and now houses an interesting museum. Above all, you should not miss the coat of arms hall on the second floor. At the end of the 17th century, a small baroque garden was laid out south of the castle, which was also repeatedly changed and finally transformed into the beautiful landscaped park, which you can stroll through today.

Prussia's intransigence towards freedom-loving lateral thinkers led the authorities to set up a prison in the cellars of the castle at the beginning of the 19th century. Between 1823 and 1830, so-called “demagogues”, public democrats and critics of the monarchy who were rigorously persecuted after the Carlsbad Resolutions, were imprisoned here. The castle park, laid out as a baroque garden in 1690, is now in the style of the 1960s with numerous sculptures. The Schlosscafé Köpenick is located in a beautiful riverside location and is nice to sit inside and outside.

The Schlossinsel Köpenick with the castle, the castle church and the castle park is located in the Berlin district Köpenick in the Dahme, opposite the city center Köpenick. The castle now houses a Museum of Applied Arts. In the castle church concerts take place. Next to the church is a restaurant. The castle park invites you to take a stroll and linger.
