Funchal is the capital of the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The city, surrounded by hills, is known for its port, gardens and Madeira wine cellars. The centuries-old Funchal Cathedral, also known as the Sé Cathedral, has Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements and is characterized by its carved wooden ceiling. In front of the harbor stands the fortress of Sao Tiago, built in the 17th century. Today it houses the Museum of Contemporary Art with an extensive collection of Portuguese works of art
