The city of Treviso hides in the heart of its historic center the remains of an early Christian baptistery whose excavations were carried out in 1967 by the Chief Inspector of Archaeological Heritage of Veneto, during the work for the reorganization of the small square on Via Canoniche. In the center of the circular plan with a diameter of about 10 meters are the remains of a suspected marble basin.
To this day, some of the mosaics of the central chamber are still visible, which are divided into three concentric bands. The external band represents pairs of dolphins with their tails intertwined with a trident, punctuated by a stylized motif perhaps representing a twisted shell. In the intermediate area, which is the largest, there are vines with birds and cupids busy harvesting grapes and with a female head that certainly represents a season, probably autumn. Finally, the internal band is decorated with fish and shells. The planimetric structure and mosaic decoration allowed the building to be dated to the first half of the 4th century. AD and its interpretation as a primitive baptismal hall in Treviso. A late antique archaeological area located in the heart of the city, a unique feature that the city of Treviso has to offer for history lovers and beyond.
