In 1996 the Westbeverner Krink built a refuge on Haus Langen on the edge of the Beveraue.
Two years earlier, lumberjack work encountered a colony of nearly 400 bats in an old, hollow trunk of beech trees.
In a large-scale rescue operation, the animals were temporarily resettled to the Lower Rhine near Wesel. Today they are back in the Beveraue. In memory of this event, the hut was called "Zur Fledermaus".
