Woman with a Bag • Karl-Henning Seemann 1982

Created by Karl-Henning Seemann and financed through donations, the then city director and art connoisseur Dr. Horst Linden initiated the acquisition of the sculpture in 1982. Negative reactions ranging from head shaking to "Waste of money!" and "Is that supposed to be beautiful?" characterized the artwork's first public days. The artist clarified: "I was more attracted to the depiction of the body's movement, the emphasis on diagonals, the draping of folds, and the exaggerated proportions. For me, every person is beautiful in their own way anyway." As a student, he would have drawn such a woman at the weekly market and long hoped for a life-size reproduction. Today, the figure, popularly known as "Fat Emma," has long been accepted and greets passersby at the entrance to the pedestrian zone.

The sculptor and draftsman Karl-Henning Seemann, born in 1934, studied in Berlin and was a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
