The medieval city fortifications in Guben had 3 gates. Klostertor, Crossener Tor and Werdertor date from the 14th to 15th centuries, together with the round towers from the 16th century, an impressive defense ensemble was created. In the 19th century, a large part of the facilities was demolished due to the poor technical condition. Only parts of it with the Maiden Tower and the Werderturm have been preserved.

The Werderturm, still preserved from the former city wall, is one of the most striking buildings in Gubin. The round, free-standing Werderturm is crowned with a toothed frieze and a conical sheet metal hood.
