At the end of the 10th century, Almanzor reduced it to ashes and Archbishop Gelmírez, in the 12th century, ordered the reconstruction of the building.
Teodomiro, Bishop of Iria, with all his retinue of canons, was the one who discovered the tomb of Santiago el Mayor on July 25, 813, hence the great importance in the Jacobean tradition.
