Jean-Baptiste Kléber (March 9, 1753 in Strasbourg; June 14, 1800 in Cairo) was a general in the French revolutionary armies. He served in the suppression of the Vendée uprising, in the First Coalition War against Austria and Prussia, and in Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt and Syria.

The statue stands centrally on Kléberplatz in the middle of Strasbourg's city center. The monument shows the Strasbourg general Jean-Baptiste Kléber holding a letter in his hand. In this letter, the British Admiral Keith is said to have asked him in vain to surrender.

This very central square hosts a market on Fridays during the day, but it's not really worth it. The monument to Jean-Baptiste Kléber stands in the middle of this square, which is also the entrance to the Aubette shopping gallery. At the top end there are also free public toilets, which are very clean!
