The fountain of 12 months was inaugurated on the occasion of the National Exhibition of 1898 for the fifty years of the Albertine Statute. According to legend, the fountain was built on the exact spot where Phaeton, son of the Sun God, fell. He ended up in the river Po after stealing his father's chariot and making the horses go wild.
The four groups of statues represent the four rivers that bathe Turin: the Po, the Dora, the Stura and Sangone.
Origin of fountains? Fountains were originally built as drinking troughs for horses and as a water supply for daily use in town or village. Now they provide refreshment and beautification in the community. Because of the complex technique, fountains were a status symbol of those in power.
