Bredevoort is a town in the Dutch municipality of Aalten. The city has a medieval character. On August 27, 1993, the Book City of Bredevoort was officially opened. Since that day, Bredevoort has been home to a large number of second-hand bookshops (over 30 shops). Various sights, such as the moat, the historic town center with medieval streets, the "Prins van Oranje" windmill, the Sint-Joris Church and the former synagogue offer beautiful photo opportunities.

The fact that there are books on every corner in the city is no coincidence. A clever plan made the town a National Book Town in 1993. As in many other small towns, many shops were empty at the time. There were too few residents to generate sufficient turnover.

A newspaper article about a book town in Wales sparked the idea - that's what we're doing too. Since then, numerous second-hand bookshops have settled in the city. The range of second-hand books is huge. Novels, non-fiction, children's and school books are on offer. The proximity to the border also ensures a large selection of German-language books.

Anyone looking for something to read will even find it outside of opening hours. There are so-called honesty shops everywhere. As the name suggests, the sellers trust in the honesty of their customers. You can choose books from the shelves and cupboards on the street around the clock. The money, usually €2 or €5 per book, is often worth it.

A visit to Bredevoort is really worthwhile. It is best to park your bike so you can stroll through the streets more relaxed. Books are everywhere, but you can also find enough cafés and restaurants for refreshments. If you look more closely, you can still clearly see the outline of the fortifications in the townscape.
