The work on the Guadelorce river at the beginning of the last century caused the population of El Chorro to multiply. The workers and their families needed to be given education and spiritual support. This is how the church and school of the Daughters of Mercy were founded, on the initiative of the engineer Rafael Benjumea, who was appointed Count of Guadalhorce by King Alfonso XIII. Today, the religious life of the Chorro neighbourhood is closely linked to that of the parish of Encarnación in the centre of the town, since both the Daughters of Mercy school and the parish ceased to exist in 1970. Here, the great moments in the lives of families are still celebrated, and every year on 27 November the feast of the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal is held.
