The name Heksenboom is taken from a Scots pine 50 meters away. In 1870, this oddity stood on a sandy plain created by overgrazing sheep. Many other trees did not survive the sand drift. The Witch Tree, however, withstood a three-meter high sand layer.

Due to the irregular shape of the tree, superstition arose in those years that a witch had fallen under it. When shepherds walked back from the Peel and the Heide to Sint Tunnis in the evening, it seemed as if the buried witch was waving her arms above the sand.

The Witch Tree has now been joined by many other trees, so that this special specimen is located on the edge of the Staatsbossen. Unfortunately, the old tree is not doing well. Unfortunately, large parts are withering and dying.
