Gerricuspützgen was perhaps originally the site of a pagan fountain cult. The now dried up spring is said to have had healing powers. The chapel is first mentioned in the 15th century. Its current form dates from the middle of the last century.
Around the spot there is a legend of the brave knight Gerrich's jumping competition with the devil from the nearby church tower. - A memorial stone commemorates bomb victims from 1944.
A hiking trail leads in both directions along the edge of the forest, from which visitors have delightful views of northern Gerresheim.
