The Monument aux enfants du Calaisis, also known as the Monument du Souvenir Français, pays tribute to the children of Calais who died in colonial expeditions or during the War of 1870. The monument was inaugurated in 1904 and is the work of an apprentice by the sculptor Carrier-Belleuse, the trainee Maugendre-Villers1. On top of the stele, the Glory crowns Captain Louis Dutertre, the hero of the Battle of Sidi-Brahim in 1845, with laurel. Dutertre, seriously wounded, was captured by Abd el-Kader; to his troops who continued to resist and threatened with beheading if he did not order them to surrender, he shouted to them: “Comrades, defend yourselves to the death” before he was killed and then beheaded.
