In 1864, a 200-seat summer theater was built on the site of a former pleasure house, combining the style of a Black Forest and a Swiss house. It changed hands several times until it was taken over by the state in 1873. It was rebuilt and expanded several times. From 1888 onward, it was called the "Royal Spa Theater" and remained in operation until the early 1970s. A support association under the patronage of conductor Justus Frantz was able to save the theater building from demolition and lovingly restore it with state subsidies.
