When the drainage canal for the polder areas in the hinterland of Cadzand was dug between 1870 and 1875 with wheelbarrows, shovels and a lot of human muscle power, one man became increasingly important: the lock keeper. Because the vital task of the "Sluuswachter" was to observe the tide levels in the North Sea and to close the heavy lock gates at high tide in front of the thundering North Sea waves, in order to protect the hinterland of Cadzand from being flooded by the seawater running in via the drainage canal.
The lock keeper at the port of Cadzand Bad stands there, braving wind and weather. His gaze is always directed at the port and the open sea. A beautiful monument for selfies and group photos.
