The foundation of Osoppo goes back to the Celts. Many of the very old buildings were destroyed by an earthquake in 1976, but most of them can be admired today after extensive restoration work. Above all, the fortress of Osoppo, perched on a hill above the natural park "Parco del Rivellino". On the fortress ground you can visit tunnels, ditches, hills and casemates; therefore, the fortress of Osoppo 1923 was declared a "national monument".

Osoppo is a municipality with 2865 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2017) in northeastern Italy in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The municipality Osoppos is located on the edge of the Alps near the Tagliamento. Districts are Pineta and Rivoli.
The municipality is bordered by the municipalities of Buja, Forgaria nel Friuli, Gemona del Friuli, Majano, San Daniele del Friuli and Trasaghis.
Osoppo train station is on the Gemona del Friuli-Sacile railway line. In the district Rivoli there is a small airfield (Aviosuperficie) for general aviation.
