The Margijsbos is located on the slopes east of the Ijsevallei, covers approximately 120 hectares and is privately owned. But as the resident and hiker who was already there knows, walking is allowed on some roads in the forest - and on the Huldenberg site you can see where that is allowed and read what I just wrote: huldenberg.be nl/margijsbos

It is interesting to know that the Margijsbos with its sunken roads, many sources, slopes and rich flora is also very old. It is also inextricably linked to Loonbeek Castle (see "Van Der Vorst Castle"). A predecessor of that castle is said to have already existed in the thirteenth century.

Both the forest and the castle, the ponds and the Ijserivierloop have changed a little over time and in the twentieth century a new owner built a villa in Normandy style in the middle of the forest.

Fact: Charlepoeng was murdered in the Margijsbos. His head was cut off and taken to Brussels where it was exhibited for several hours on the Grand Place.

Charle-who? Charlepoeng is a popular corruption of Charles de Loupoigne, which in turn was a pseudonym of Charles-François Jacqmin. This Brussels resistance fighter took on the French occupiers in the period 1790-1799. Cousin Charles, as he was also called, served as inspiration for the Peasants' War, the major uprising in 1798 against the authority that the French had established in the Southern Netherlands. Charlepoeng did not participate in the Peasants' War and went into hiding, but in 1799 he became active again until his troops, known as the Armée Belgique, were surrounded in Neerijse and here in Loonbeek and the French finally caught him in the forest here and that everyone would know.
