Between the Ehrenburg and up to the Veste Coburg, the path leads directly through the Hofgarten, an extensive landscape park that borders on the Coburg city center. The origins of the court garden go back to the 17th century, when Duke Albrecht von Sachsen-Coburg commissioned the planning of the baroque garden. The initially strictly geometrical garden was redesigned almost 200 years later under Duke Ernst I to a landscape garden based on the English model. Under his successor, Duke Ernst II, the court garden finally got its current size and appearance. The large bronze equestrian monument of Ernst II, which was erected in 1899 above the palace square, reminds of this today. In addition to its historical and botanical importance, the Hofgarten today has an important recreational function for the population.
