The Datteln Sea may not be a sea in the true sense of the word, but the fascination of this vast body of water is just as fascinating. Its name derives from the time when the first canals were built in northwest Germany. The Datteln Canal Interchange connects the canals of the West German canal network. All four Ruhr canals meet in the city of Datteln: the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the Rhine-Herne Canal, the Datteln-Hamm Canal, and the Wesel-Datteln Canal, so Datteln is rightly called Europe's largest canal junction. The area lies on the Route of Industrial Heritage. The construction of the canals and locks was an important step in the development of industry. Canal shipping remains a key factor for the economy and industry in northwest Germany today.
