In the left wing of the gate building was the holding cell building, also known as the bunker in the language of the camp.
The holding cell building was the camp prison and the camp's feared torture site. The SS called this “interrogation until confession.”
The detention building had 26 cells; the cells, which were around two meters long and 1.40 meters wide, could be heated separately and darkened. From 1938 onwards they were always fully occupied.
The SS guards tortured on their own initiative or on behalf of others. They tortured people, hanged them from the bars or murdered them with injections. In Cell 1, people spent their final hours before hanging in the basement of the crematorium.

The cells could be darkened individually until it was completely dark. The cell block was also called a bunker. The SS guards tortured the prisoners in this block as they pleased, sometimes to the point of death. Inmates were held in cell 1 until their execution.
