Thull - In Belgium he is called the lord of the castle, but Gerjan Schijlen prefers to be a gardener. He is starting a new wine estate in Thull with Wijnlandgoed Sterreheim. A major job was completed in May 2023 with the planting of 45,000 vines.
Considering the grape varieties that Wijnlandgoed Sterreheim has planted, Thull will become a richer Burgundian vineyard. There are three white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Gerjan Schijlen and his team are currently working on five hectares, on which they have planted 50,000 vines. "The poles are 1.40 metres high and the space between the rows is 1.30 metres. That is almost like in Champagne and Burgundy. Everything revolves around quality, the number of bottles is not relevant. Next year we will plant another 3.5 hectares with 35,000 vines, including the Pinot Meunier and Riesling varieties. We will plant the Riesling especially for Erik Sauter, who has been my rock from day one. If I don't know what to do, he is the first person I call. We will only make sparkling wine from the first harvest. We are developing it together with a good friend, Mathias Collard from the Collard-Milesi champagne house.
