The Aegidienkirche in Erfurt forms the east entrance to the Krämerbrücke at the Wenigemarkt with its archway. It is one of the former two bridgehead churches. At the western end stood since the 11th century, the Benedictine Church, which was demolished in 1890 and today only reminiscent of the name of Benediktsplatz (Wikipedia).

Over the Rathausbrücke, built in 1895, one goes to Wenigemarkt and has the south side of the only inhabited bridge in Central Europe in mind. From Wenigemarkt, one of Erfurt's smaller squares, you can see the last of Erfurt's four bridgehead churches, the Ägidienkirche. It has been mentioned as a way chapel already in 1110, its stone successor was built in 1321-24 in connection with the Krämerbrücke and served the traveling merchants and their companions for pastoral care and to receive the sacraments. Through the archway, over which the nave lies, one arrives at the bridge.

The Aegidienkirche Erfurt belongs to the Evangelical Methodist Church. That it is an independent church and does not belong to the Erfurt Evangelical Church Circle. However, as the EmK, we are in good ecumenical contact with the Evangelical Church. The Ev. Kaufmannskirche is in the neighborhood.
