The Gottfriedsbank mine was a small mining pit in the south of Dortmund, more precisely in the forest area of the Bittermark along the Olpkebach. It was part of the early mining in the region and was used as early as the 18th century to extract coal seams close to the surface. The relics of mining, such as pinges (cavities in the ground caused by tunnel collapses) and small dumps, are still visible in the area and bear witness to the past. Red mine water emerges from the ground in some places due to iron oxides, which indicates former mining.

After the Second World War, the mine was reactivated under the name Kleinzeche Stadt Dortmund or Zeche Olpketal to meet the acute demand for coal. Today, information boards and historical traces in the nature reserve remind us of the industrial history of the Olpketal and the Bittermark, where warning signs still point out possible mining damage.
