The tower was built in 1908 according to the plans of the architect Oskar Lindberg. The builder was the Swedish botanist Veit Wittrock, after whom the building is also called "Wittrock's Tower". The tower was intended to serve as a lookout tower and a workplace for Wittrock, as well as a museum for his seed and cone collection. The collection is still in the tower.
Since the early 1990s, the tower has been used as an artist's studio. On a few occasions a year, cultural-historical walks are organized in the garden, and then it is possible to climb the tower.
